Here are a few tips:

  • Observe the difference between “swing” rhythms and “straight” rhythms.
    • For instance: “O__ say”, “by the..”, “through the..” are swung.
    • “What so..” “at the” “o’er the” are straight.
    • Listen to the recording to hear the difference.
  • Breathe after LIGHT, GLEAMING, FIGHT, STREAMING, GLARE, AIR, THERE, WAVE, AND FREE (anywhere there is a “check” on the score.
  • Do not breathe anywhere where there is a red line carrying the phrases over.
  • Pronounce “light” and “flight” like with an “AH”.
  • Pronounce “glare” “air” and “there” like you’re saying “eh” — the “glEHr” or “EHr”, etc.
